Global Village/Guatemala 2011
NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR AUGUST 2011 - Commitment requested by June 7th
Habitat for Humanity is an international housing ministry building in more than 100 countries that lack decent affordable housing. It's vision is for everyone in the world to have a decent place to live. Since its founding in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has helped build or repair more than 400,000 homes and serve over 2 million people around the world.
There are multiple approaches to help us serve those in need in our global community as we continually strive for decent shelter locally.
1. Global Village
The Global Village experience is a way to learn about another culture while volunteering and improving the lives of others. It is travel with purpose. Any individual can participate and Habitat programs in more than 40 countries host international volunteers.
Linfield sociology professor Jeff Peterson has twice led students to experience Guatemala through the Global Village experience as a January term class (2008 and 2011) and once as an Alternative Spring Break trip (2009). In 2008 more than 14 community members also traveled; the Linfield class was joined by 17 community members representing the McMinnville Area HfH affiliate in January 2011. MAHfH plans to send volunteers again to Guatemala again, though the next trip has not yet been scheduled. To express interest in future trips, please email us. Learn more about joining an open trip at the Global Village website.
2. Tithe
In covenant with Habitat for Humanity International and in accordance with our ecumenical Christian roots, U.S. affiliates, like McMinnville Area Habitat for Humanity (MAHfH), tithe a portion of their un-designated donations to sister affiliates. Acting on the belief that all of our brothers and sisters need at least a simple, decent, affordable, healthy place in which to live, we share the amazing abundance of our God with people we do not know. We believe that there is enough to go around, if we all share. McMinnville Area Habitat for Humanity tithes the construction cost of one Habitat home in Guatemala for each Habitat home built in our local service area. Since 2006, MAHfH has provided the funding needed for an additional 16 homes to be built in Guatemala in addition to the 42 homes built locally since 1991. In total, our community has provided the tangible shelter, dignity, and social capital needed for 58 families to rise out of the cycle of poverty!
